Who We Are

ccalogoThe Commonwealth Cancer Association (CCA) is a community-based nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting cancer awareness and prevention, providing patient support services, and serving as the liasion and advocate for cancer issues in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the region.

Began as a coalition of volunteers who are committed to reducing the burden of cancer in the Northern Mariana Islands. These volunteers serve on the CCA Board, help raise funds, and participate in training, outreach, and patient support programs.

Seven volunteers serve on CCA's board of directors, including one nonvoting senior advisor, and one nonvoting legal advisor. These individuals represent the diversity of the CNMI.  The board engages in strategic planning and program and policy development, and retains the services of one manager to coordinate CCA programs, and one accounting consultant to prepare CCA's financial reports.

The CCA's programs are fully supported by contributions from corporations, families, and individuals.

Programs & Services

If you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with cancer, you probably have many questions and concerns. The Commonwealth Cancer Association is here to help. We offer support and information for people living with cancer, their caregivers, families, and friends.

Survivor Hope and Assistance

The Commonwealth Cancer Association coordinates monthly cancer survivor support meetings in collaboration with the Department of Public Health and other partners.  Each meeting usually includes special educational presentations on selected topics ranging from stress management and communication strategies to proper nutrition.  Support meetings offer people facing cancer a safe and confidential place to meet others in similar circumstances, to share experiences and practical strategies, and to develop new relationships in a social environment.

The Commonwealth Cancer Association also provides financial assistance of up to $500 per year for qualifying expenses such as nutritional supplements, diapers, bedpads, prosthetic devices, and wound care supplies.  These funds cannot be used, however, to cover medical or surgical procedures, or travel expenses.  In addition to financial assistance, the Commonwealth Cancer Association offers equipment on loan such as hospital beds, wheelchairs, shower and bedside commodes, and walkers, at no charge to people living with cancer.

Awareness and Education

CCA engages in various awareness and outreach activities and has produced various educational publications such as brochures, pamphlets, and DVD's tailored for the diverse community of the CNMI.

CCA participates in community events such as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Great Marianas Smokeout.

CCA conducts cancer education presentations upon request to group of all ages.

For professional advice or education CCA maintains a roster of health care practitioners willing to confer with patients and families. Several cancer survivors are also willing to talk with newly diagnosed patients. These two avenues provide support and education.
